  • CARETAKER BEST PRACTICES | StrayTise

< Back CARETAKER BEST PRACTICES “Accountability & responsibility is a trying virtue unless distributed periodically among others, if not evenly. “ 1.Differentiate between emergencies, cases that can wait & cases that need your personal attention or the ones that can be delegated. 2.Make people accountable as opposed to being that enthusiastic student raising a hand all the time when asked a question. Others may know the answer but might just opt to remain silent. Don't be an enthusiastic caretaker. Remember, experience means showing the way, not walking the path for someone else. 3.Collective excellence is achieved only in pockets, so here's how you go about it - •Identify feeders in your area. You may not want to be part of a large group but can always form your own to create better reach. •Build a network of rescuers and caretakers in likeminded people. They could be a mixed group of garages, bakeries, bbmp workers, tea stalls, road vendors, shops / stores, factories, etc. You’d be surprised how handy this network will be when you’re looking for lost dogs or want to facilitate a sterilization drive. •Pass on knowledge, its valuable! •Guide them when they call you for help. You'd be surprised how many of your rescues can be managed remotely Just like majority of the cases can be spot treated and not every incident needs admission. In my experience. 65% of the cases can be spot treated. Yes, it takes huge effort, determination and discipline however there are several bright sides to it. It’s economical, we continue to expand our knowledge, people watch what you’re doing, ask questions and then get involved and some follow suit with your help. •Keep a list of all your rescues and follow up regularly for updates or visit them when you have time. •Teach people what and what not to feed. Educate people to leave water outside their homes and stores. •Encourage them to pick up an animal in distress while guiding them over a video call. Key guidance techniques will involve noosing the dog, carrying, transportation, admission and fund raising. Prepare them on the responsibility they are singing up for. Explain the impact they are creating. Note: This may not work for all cases so situational discretion is recommended. •Work with your vets to facilitate a community animal discount for them so they are encouraged to help the next animal. •It's ok to ask reporters to pay the vets for rescues they bring to you for help. One can make a larger impact only when there is balance in the operation. •Most importantly, be patient. What seems like a small thing for a seasoned caretaker might be a sea of information for an aspiring caretaker so no matter how small a question us or how many times you’re being asked, respond patiently. • Why Straytise | StrayTise

Whether you are a pet parent, a community animal caretaker or curious about the lives of community animals, this space is for you. WHY STRAYTISE Recently (16 Nov, 2023), The Karnataka High Court directed the Karnataka government to undertake extensive measures to publicize guidelines on feeding street animals. “Publicize ” AKA “create awareness ”. Additionally, "It cannot be much disputed that unless steps are taken to give wide publicity to these Guidelines , their effective implementation may not happen and that would defeat the very purpose for which the Government has come out with the same," the Court said. (Note: These guidelines, rules & regulations have been into effect for several years now including the prevention of cruelty to animals act 2001) (This is an extract of the news & here’s the link) https://www.barandbench.com/news/publicise-policy-feeding-stray-dogs-karnataka-high-court-state?_gl=1*1e17dem*_ga*aG9Nc1ZQYUxueHZ3X1Q4WlVHYV9sZUF0R0tLSEtid3Q3d0hPbE91WUFTNVpRUXlxRVpic0JSc0lRT1hpM2l4TQ..*_ga_2MGJDQEB43*MTcwMDE1MDkxMC4xLjEuMTcwMDE1MTE0Mi4wLjAuMA As quoted in the news article: “The Court suggested various modes of publicizing the same including uploading it on official websites, distributing pamphlets and placards in busy areas, and exploring opportunities for screening in theaters and television networks.” Straytise is one such effort. StrayTise makes sense. WHY STRAYTISE? Let's move on to statistics of a recent survey we conducted. This questionnaire was sent to a mixed group of people to ensure balance in views. Group A: Community animal caretakers Group B: People who lived with pets but never got involved with community animals. Group C: People who never lived with pets or fed a community animal. Group D: People who weren’t comfortable with community animals. Group E: People who were just neutral in their views and never mulled over this subject. The results were heartwarming & thought provoking. Statistics IN TERMS OF THE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF COMMUNITY ANIMALS AND AWARENESS IN THE AREAS OF LAW - 85% VOTED YES to community dog / animal feeding. 65% WERE UNAWARE of the community animal and caretaker protection laws. 80% WEREN'T AWARE of the community / colony animal caretaker card issued by ANIMAL WELFARE BOARD OF INDIA IN TERMS OF CURRENT VIEWS ON THE COMMUNITY DOGS/ ANIMAL SITUATION & THEIR OPINIONS - 57.41% referred to it as a PROBLEM . 25.93% HAD NO IDEA of the situation 14.81% WERE CARETAKERS AS AN EXTENSION TO THE EARLIER QUESTION - 66.67% VOTED FOR STERILIZATION to contain the population 37.04% VOTED for REHABILITATION IN TERMS OF INFORMATION ON STERILIZATION, VACCINATION , IDENTIFICATION OF THESE DOGS / ANIMALS & INITIATIVES BY THE GOVERNMENT - 55% VOTED NO 32% VOTED YES IN TERMS OF OWNERSHIP OF COMMUNITY DOG / ANIMAL STERILIZATION & VACCINATION - 65% said GOVT Authorities 50% said NGOs 32% said VETS 34% said INDIVIDUALS 6% said NOBODY WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE PAIN POINTS WITH COMMUNITY ANIMALS - 61.54% said CHASING BIKES 55.77% said UNHYGENIC CONDITIONS 38.46% said THEY ATTACK HUMANS 32.69% said THEY BARK TOO MUCH 30.77% said THEY HOWL AT NIGHT WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE POSITIVES OF COMMUNITY ANIMALS - 66.04% PRAISED THEIR LOYALTY 65% said THEY MAKE GREAT COMPANIONS 34% said THEY KEEP RATS AWAY Conclusion 85% voted a YES to community animal tending. (Feeding & caretaking) 72% feeling safe (be it themselves or their street / homes) with their presence 67% voted for sterilization (with the rest suggesting adoption, rehabilitation etc) 66% praising their loyalty. 61% quoted chasing bikes 57% referred to population of community dogs / animals as a problem. (Details is in the statistics section) 38% quoted attacking humans as an issue. This data is a compelling view of a society that is inclined to encourage human-animal coexistence. The scales of compassion & empathy clearly outweigh aversion. In over 2 decades of meeting people from different walks of life, many have expressed gratitude to the compassion that community animal caretakers demonstrate. Many have objected. Many have supported. Many were neutral. The fundamentals of – 1. Why are there so many dogs? 2. They are such a menace! 3. Why are they not a threat? 4. Why are you providing food and water? boils down to a circle of apathy & ignorance which should ideally take us to a stage of empathy to be able to ask- 1. What is vaccination? 2. What is sterilization? 3. Who will sterilize them? 4. What are the benefits of tending to them? 5. Are they really needed in my society? 6. Why can't we be like the other countries? While there are plenty informative websites with great material & guidance, the ones who use it are INTERESTED to go DEEPER into the subject. What about those who don't know where to look for information or find it too much to absorb? Why should unawareness be ridiculed? Why should it be labeled as "hatred" Or "unkindness"? HENCE, STRAYTISE. StrayTise makes sense. * Picture credit: Google I could fear an animal, yet be a kind person. I could hold a different perspective & principle on kindness, nobleness, the joy of giving and charity yet not get involved with animals or HARM THEM. I could watch a wild animal caretaker with awe but still maintain my distance. Isn't the same theory applicable to the ones watching community animal caretakers from a distance? Food for thought! Having said that, there's a thick line I'd draw between unawareness VS interference, cruelty and hate. More on that later. Now, Picture this. Animal welfare is a huge truck running on 4 big wheels. The TYRES are - Law & order & Governing bodies AWBI (animal welfare board of India) SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals , a nonprofit animal welfare organization around the world) AWRN's (Animal welfare research network, across the world) The RIMS are NGO's / hospitals / vets that operate as trauma / treatment centers in support to these organizations. The SPOKES are - Volunteers, rescuers, citizens, adoption groups, blood donor groups, behavioral trainers, physiotherapists, nutritionists etc. How will that vehicle move forward in consistent speed without support & contribution? (By contribution I don't mean monetary). That support is AWARENESS . HENCE, STRAYTISE. StrayTise makes sense.
